Little Tavern Creek Valley

The settling of the Little Tavern Creek Valley in the 1850’s took hard work from the entire community. Spring season required planting and perhaps a new cabin to replace the rude log structure thrown up in the fall for hasty shelter before the winter snows. Spring also heralded the arrival of the the native “Carolina Parakeets” so well painted by John J. Audubon and documented by early travelers as “raucous clouds of bright green birds that filled the sky”. Extinct by 1900, the parakeet trailed desirable tail feathers sought for stylish women???s hats.
